Stem cell therapies

Stem cell therapy is a modern regenerative treatment method used for osteoarthritis and other joint conditions. At the ROC in Aschheim near Munich, we use regenerative therapies involving the body’s own biological materials to support the body’s natural regenerative processes.

The goal of treatment is to relieve pain, improve joint function, and enhance your quality of life—ideally without surgery.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are special cells in the body that can renew themselves and, under certain conditions, develop into various cell types. They play an important role in the maintenance and regeneration of tissues.

Today, it is generally accepted that regenerative therapies do not exert their effects solely through the cells themselves. Rather, these cells release signaling molecules that can influence inflammatory processes, support cell-to-cell communication, and promote the body’s natural regenerative processes.

What is stem cell therapy?

The term “stem cell therapy” is often used as an umbrella term for various cell-based regenerative therapies that utilize the body’s own biological materials. Depending on the medical condition, different regenerative procedures are used.

The goal of treatment is to support the body’s natural regenerative processes. According to current scientific understanding, cell-based regenerative therapies exert their effects primarily through the release of signaling molecules, the modulation of inflammatory processes, and the support of the body’s own repair mechanisms.

Clinical studies and real-world experience show that regenerative therapies can help alleviate pain and improve joint function in selected patients.

At ROC, we isolate stem cells in two different ways:

Belly fat

Using the SVF/MFAT procedure , we extract stem cells from abdominal fat

ear cartilage

In the AMT procedure, we harvest stem cells from the ear cartilage

The processed autologous biological materials are then specifically injected into the affected joint. There, by releasing signaling molecules, they can support the body’s natural regenerative processes and help improve the tissue environment.

Advantages of stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis

  • Potential to delay surgery: Depending on the condition and individual findings, regenerative therapy may help delay joint replacement surgery or, in select cases, avoid it altogether.
  • Pain relief and improved joint function: Regenerative therapies can help relieve pain and improve the mobility of the affected joint.
  • Supporting natural regenerative processes: By releasing biological signaling molecules, regenerative therapies can promote a regenerative tissue environment and support the body’s own repair mechanisms.
  • High biocompatibility: Since only the body's own biological material is used, the treatment is generally very well tolerated.
  • Short recovery time: Compared to surgical procedures, the downtime is usually minimal, so many patients can resume their daily routines after a short time.

Stem cell therapy procedure

Every treatment begins with a thorough examination and a personalized consultation. Based on your symptoms, the diagnostic findings, and your medical history, we determine which regenerative therapy is right for you.

Next, the patient’s own biological material—such as ear cartilage or adipose tissue, depending on the procedure—is harvested, processed in our in-house laboratory, and precisely injected into the affected joint.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, is minimally invasive, and is typically carried out under local anesthesia. Because of the gentle nature of the procedure, many patients are able to resume their daily activities after only a short time.

Relieving pain without surgery

Stem cell therapy is an outpatient, minimally invasive procedure. The goal of the treatment is to relieve pain, improve joint function, and support the body’s natural regenerative processes.

Because the procedure is minimally invasive, many patients are able to resume their daily activities after only a short time. Depending on the condition and individual findings, the treatment can help delay surgery or, in select cases, avoid it altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Is stem cell therapy the right treatment for me?

Stem cell therapy is particularly suitable for patients with osteoarthritis or chronic joint pain. If you are suffering from pain that is affecting your quality of life and have tried alternative treatments, regenerative therapy using your body’s own biological materials may be a suitable treatment option.

As someone with public health insurance, can I receive treatment at the ROC?

Since we are a private practice and, unfortunately, are not contracted with any health insurance plans, if you have public health insurance, you can only receive treatment from us on a self-pay basis.

Is stem cell therapy painful?

Stem cell therapyis generallywell tolerated. Since the procedure at the ROC is minimally invasive and performed under local anesthesia, pain during the procedure is usually minimal.

Depending on the procedure (e.g., harvesting fromabdominal fat or ear cartilage), you may experience abrief sensation of pressureor mild discomfort at the harvest site. Even after the injection into the affected joint, temporary reactions such asmild pain, a feeling of tightness, or swellingmay occur. These symptoms usually subside after a short time.

The severity of the discomfort depends, among other things, on the area being treated, the extraction method, and your individual pain tolerance. During a personal consultation, we will determine which procedure is the gentlest option for you.

How much does stem cell therapy cost?

Thecost of stem cell therapydepends primarily onthe source of the cellsandthe number of joints being treated.

The following guidelines currently apply at ROC Aschheim: See the cost overview

Actual costs may vary depending on the diagnosis, the scope of treatment, and your individual treatment plan. You will typically receive a clear breakdown of costs following your examination and consultation.

How does stem cell therapy work?

Instem cell therapy, the body’s own cellsare harvested, processed, and thenspecifically introduced into the In stem cell therapy—depending on the procedure—the body’s own biological materials are harvested, processed in the in-house laboratory, and then specifically introduced into the affected joint. The goal of the treatment is to support the body’s natural regenerative processes and promote joint function.

Procedure:

Examination and Diagnosis First, a thorough examination is conducted to determine whether regenerative therapy is appropriate for your symptoms and which procedure is suitable for you.

Collection of biological material
Depending on the method, the sample is collected from:

  • Adipose Tissue (SVF/MFAT)
  • Ear cartilage (AMT)

Processing in Our In-House Laboratory
The collected biological material is processed in our in-house laboratory according to standardized quality procedures and prepared for treatment.

Targeted Application
The processed biological material is then introduced into the affected joint using a minimally invasive technique. Once there, it can support the body’s natural regenerative processes by releasing signaling molecules and help improve the tissue microenvironment.

Treatment is provided on an outpatient basis and is intended to help relieve pain and improve joint function.

What diseases can be treated with stem cells?

Regenerative therapies using the body's own biological materials are used in orthopedics primarily to treat degenerative and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system. The goal is to relieve pain, improve joint function, and support the body's natural regenerative processes.

The most common areas of application include:

  • Osteoarthritis (e.g., knee, hip, shoulder, or thumb saddle joint)
  • Cartilage damage
  • Chronic joint pain
  • Degenerative Joint Diseases

Whether stem cell therapy is right for you depends on various factors—including your diagnosis, the stage of the disease, the affected joint structure, and your individual symptoms. That is why a thorough orthopedic examination and a personalized consultation are conducted before every treatment.
